Session #1
Mondays and Wednesdays (March 8-April 7)
2:45-3:30pm: Creative Dance Theatre
Who: Playdates (ages 4.5-6)
Instructor: Susan Paino
Description: Kids who love music, dancing, singing and being on stage love this class. Students develop self-expression and confidence, gain success in working cooperatively with their peers, and become enthusiastic performers. Creative dance and drama accompanied by a wide array of music is a focal point of the class.
3:45-5:00pm: Intro. To Acting:
Who: act 1 (grades 4-6) and students in 3rd grade (by permission)
Instructor: TBD
Description: Through games, improvisation and ensemble exercises, this class will help young actors to develop confidence, stage presence and their ability to work as part of a group. We will use the five Ws—who, what, when, where and why—to create fully realized imaginary worlds and characters, giving young actors tools to, in the words of Sanford Meisner “live truthfully in imaginary circumstances”.
5:15-6:45pm: Improvisation
Who: act 2 (grades 7-9)
Instructor: Matt Chapuran
Description: This class will let students toss aside memorization and text and instead focus on listening, teamwork and being in the moment. Improv games will expose students to mime, character building and theatre games designed to help them think on their feet. The class is taught by Stoneham Theatre’s General Manager, Matt Chapuran, who has performed, directed and taught improv for more than 15 years, most recently performing with IprovBoston’s Family Show.
7:30-9:00pm: Tap Boot Camp for act 3 AND ADULTS!
Who: Grades 10-12 and adults
Instructor: Chris Carcione
Description: This class is intended for the beginning to intermediate tapper who is looking to be pushed, and gain the skills required for fast-paced, tap-heavy musicals like 42nd Street, Crazy for You and Singin’ in the Rain, or even musical theatre conservatory programs. Starting from the ground-up, this class will introduce students to basic tap steps and techniques, explore improvisation tap, focus on rhythm training, and reinforce structure and style.
Session # 1 Tuesdays and Thursdays (March 9-April 8)
3:30-4:30pm: Voice and Movement
Who: Overture (grades 1-3)
Instructor: Resident Youth Ensemble students
4:45-6:00pm: Building a Character
Who: act 1 (grades 4-6) who have previously taken Introduction To Acting
Instructor: TBD
Description: How do you turn yourself into someone else onstage? Creating a strong character is the building block of any strong show, and an important skill for a young actor. We will be building on the work done in Intro. To Acting to explore more fully one of the five Ws: Who. During this workshop, students use their bodies, voices and brains to develop characters both crazy and calm, like themselves and different.
Session #2
Mondays and Wednesdays (April 26-May 26)
2:45-3:30pm: DancePlay
Who: Playdates (ages 3-4)
Instructor: Susan Paino
Description: This introduction to dance focuses in moving to music and allows for creative fun. Students participate in warm-up exercises to develop their coordination and concentration, as well as movement games and dancing with musical instruments, props and costumes. Please note: this class is limited to 10 students.
3:45-5:00pm: Introduction To Acting
Who: act 1 and students in 3rd grade (by permission)
Instructor: Caitlin Lowans
Description: Through games, improvisation and ensemble exercises, this class will help young actors to develop confidence, stage presence and their ability to work as part of a group. We will use the five Ws—who, what, when, where and why—to create fully realized imaginary worlds and characters, giving young actors tools to, in the words of Sanford Meisner “live truthfully in imaginary circumstances”.
5:15-6:45pm: Playing with Shakespeare
Who: act 2 (grades 7-9)
Instructor: Joy Lamberton
Description: Shakespeare wrote plays to be played by players in a playhouse! So let’s play with some Shakespeare! Through collaborative movement and voice games our ensemble will explore the world and words of Shakespeare.
7:30-9:00pm: Dancing for Dudes
Who: Grades 7-12
Instructor: Chris Carcione
Description: Ever wanted to take a dance class but been afraid of being the only guy? More often, guys are expected to be triple-threats, just like the ladies. This class will cover basic dance techniques you’re likely to see in a performance or audition and essential musical theatre dance styles, but from a guy’s perspective. Combinations will explore styles including jazz funk, ballet, and lyrical jazz and will feature choreography by the instructor as well as original choreography from music videos and lesser-known Broadway shows that require dudes to dance.
Session #2 Tuesdays and Thursdays (April 27- May 27)
3:30-4:30pm: Playmaking
Who: overture (grades 1-3)
Instructor: Caitlin Lowans
Description: Using games, improvisation, brainstorming and a magical costume trunk, children dive into their imaginations to create their own plays inspired by a favorite fairy and folk tales. The show is only limited by our imagination. Over the course of the five weeks, we’ll choose a tale, determine the basics of the story we want to tell, improvise a script, create our own set and costumes before a final sharing for parents and friends.
4:45-6:00pm: Working with Text!
Who: act 1 students who have previous taken Introduction To Acting
Instructor: Caitlin Lowans
Description: An actor is like a detective. The playwright has left clues about our characters in the script, now we have to unearth them. We’ll use script analysis, translated for the elementary school brain to discover the given circumstances—or the who, what, when, where and why—that can already be found in the play itself. We’ll move on to exercises for the voice and body that help illuminate those words and facts for the actor and audience. As a bonus, all actors will come away from the workshop with an age-appropriate monologue that they will be able to use for future auditions!
